Do I Need a Separate Website Page for Every City I Serve?

City pages only help when they give people in that area information they actually need. Near-identical pages risk Google's doorway-abuse policy.

The short answer: Not necessarily. Creating a page for every nearby city does not automatically improve visibility. The more useful question is whether a page gives people in that location information they actually need.

Google’s spam policies describe “doorway abuse” as creating pages for similar searches that funnel people to another page. One example is having pages targeted at different cities that direct visitors to the same destination. That does not mean every location page is improper. It does mean each page should have a real purpose beyond changing the city name in a template.

A roofer may have useful differences to explain across its service area, such as which projects it takes on, how far crews travel, or local requirements that have been verified. A plumber might clarify whether emergency service is available throughout the whole area. An attorney should identify the jurisdictions the firm is authorized to serve, without suggesting an office or license it does not have.

Before creating a location page, ask:

  • Do we actually serve customers in this area?
  • Is there location-specific information prospective customers need?
  • Can we explain availability, process, or local context accurately?
  • Does the page help a visitor decide what to do next?

If the answers are mostly no, a clear service-area page may be more helpful than dozens of near-identical city pages. If you do create a local page, make it accurate, specific, easy to find on your site, and useful to someone in that area.

For attorneys, also follow the advertising rules that apply in each relevant jurisdiction. Do not imply authorization to practice or a physical office where neither exists.

Useful geographic content helps people understand where you work and what to expect. It does not guarantee a local ranking or AI recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

Is one service-area page enough? Often, yes, if it clearly lists where you work and any limits by location.

Can I reuse a template for city pages? Only if each page adds real, location-specific information beyond swapping the city name.
