When AI Gets Your Business Wrong: How to Fix Incorrect Information
AI assistants repeat what they find, so wrong answers almost always trace back to a wrong or outdated source.
The short answer: AI assistants repeat what they find, so wrong answers almost always trace back to a wrong or outdated source. Find the source, fix it there, make your correct facts consistent everywhere, then re-test. Don't publish another conflicting version and hope the assistant sorts it out.
Why AI gets business facts wrong
An assistant doesn't know your business the way a person does. It assembles an answer from training data and, when it searches, from pages it retrieves. Common causes of errors include:
- An old phone number, address, price, or service list on a directory you forgot about.
- Conflicting details between your website, Google Business Profile, and social pages.
- Confusion with a similarly named business.
- Too little public information, so the assistant guesses or declines to answer.
- Outdated information that remains in older training data even after you've updated everything.
The real cost is quiet. A prospect who sees a wrong price or the wrong service area may simply never contact you, and you won't know why.
Step 1: Find out what AI is saying
Ask direct questions in ChatGPT (with web search on), Perplexity, and Google AI Mode:
- "What does [business] do, and where do they operate?"
- "What are [business]'s hours, phone number, and address?"
- "How much does [business] charge for [service]?"
- "Is [business] licensed and insured?"
- "What do customers say about [business]?"
Write down every error: prices, locations, years in business, services, awards, and names. Our guide to checking whether ChatGPT mentions your business covers a fuller testing routine.
Step 2: Trace each error to its source
When the answer includes a citation, open it. The cited page usually owns the wrong fact. When there's no citation, search for the wrong detail itself, such as the old phone number, in quotation marks, and see which pages show it.
Check the usual suspects:
- Google Business Profile
- Yelp, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Apple Maps
- Industry and trade directories
- Chamber of Commerce and local listings
- Data aggregators that feed other directories
- Old press pages, blog posts, and your own website
Step 3: Confirm the truth, then correct it at the source
Before editing, decide what is correct: the exact business name, address format, phone number, hours, service list, and pricing language. Then update the page that owns each wrong fact. If several sources disagree, fix all of them. Updating only one leaves the others to contradict it.
For listings you don't control, use the platform's claim or correction process, or contact the publisher. For old pages on your own site, update them or redirect them to the current version.
Step 4: Make the correct facts easy to repeat
Wrong answers often fill a vacuum. Give assistants a clear, quotable version of the truth:
- A plain-language "About" page stating who you are, what you do, where you work, and your credentials.
- Service pages that state scope, area, and typical price ranges rather than "contact us for a quote."
- Consistent business details in your site footer and structured data. See schema, llms.txt, and AI crawlers.
- Matching details across every directory. This is the heart of becoming a trusted entity.
Step 5: Wait, then re-test
Changes can take time to appear. Live-retrieval assistants may reflect corrections within days of the source updating, while older information in a model's training data can linger until the model is refreshed. After correcting, repeat the exact same questions and record the results. If a wrong claim persists, return to step 2 because another source probably still carries it.
When AI is saying something harmful or false
If an assistant states something defamatory or seriously damaging, such as an invented complaint, save the answer with the date and prompt, correct any source that supports it, and use the platform's feedback or reporting tools. For legal questions about false statements, talk to a lawyer. We aren't able to give legal advice.
Preventing the next wrong answer
- Review your listings every quarter, and any time you change phone, address, hours, or pricing.
- Keep one master document of your correct business facts.
- Assign one person to own updates.
- Re-run your test prompts monthly.
This is the ongoing kind of work that a one-off campaign misses, which is why we use a 12-month method and publish your details in AI-crawlable mirrors that stay in sync.
Frequently asked questions
Can I tell ChatGPT to correct its answer about me? Telling it in a chat generally doesn't change what it says to others. Fixing the underlying sources does.
How long until corrections show up? It varies. Live search results can change within days; training-based knowledge updates on the provider's schedule.
Why does AI mix me up with another business? Usually a similar name or overlapping details. Make your name, address, and descriptors distinct and consistent, and add your location and service to your descriptions.
