How to Measure AI Visibility and Connect It to Calls or Leads
There's no single AI visibility score. Combine platform reports, repeatable prompt checks, and analytics to connect AI visibility with calls and leads — without overstating attribution.
Measuring visibility in AI-generated answers is still developing. There is no single score that shows whether a business appears across every AI assistant, prompt, location, and search experience. A practical approach combines the reporting platforms provide with repeatable prompt checks, then compares those observations with website activity and leads.
Start with platform reporting
Use reporting from the platforms where it’s available:
- Google Search Console offers a Generative AI performance report for generative AI features in Google Search and Discover. It can help you understand the performance Google reports for those experiences, but it does not measure every AI assistant or every kind of exposure.
- Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report provides information such as cited pages and grounding queries for Microsoft AI experiences.
These reports answer different questions. Neither is a complete, cross-platform measure of how often people encounter your business in AI answers.
Track a consistent sample of prompts
Create a small set of questions that reflect how potential customers might ask for help. Include questions about your services, customer problems, recommendations, and locations you genuinely serve.
For each check, record:
- The AI platform and exact prompt
- The date and location context, if relevant
- Whether your business or website appeared
- Any pages or other sources cited
Repeat the same checks over time. This creates a useful sample for spotting patterns, but it is not a universal or stable ranking. Results can vary by prompt, location, and platform.
Connect visibility checks with website activity
Analytics can help you understand what happens after people visit your website. In Google Analytics 4, traffic acquisition reports show traffic-source information, and key-event reporting can track actions you’ve configured as important, such as form submissions or bookings.
Where possible, track calls, form submissions, bookings, or purchases using your existing analytics and customer systems. Consistent campaign tagging can also help identify traffic from links you control.
Be careful about attribution
A lead that arrives after an AI visibility check does not prove that an AI answer caused it. A customer may have encountered your business through several channels, and some AI interactions may never result in a trackable website visit.
Report what you can observe, such as platform-reported performance, citations, referral visits, and configured key events. Keep those measures distinct from conclusions you cannot verify, such as whether a particular AI answer generated a specific phone call.
